Broadband Illinois interviewed Brenda Soland, Commerical Manager at Mid Century Telephone Cooperative about a new fiber expansion to the resort community of Oak Run and other happenings at the North Central Illinois company.
Tell us about the Oak Run fiber project:
Mid Century Telephone Cooperative made substantial enhancements to its Oak Run, Illinois service area recently by completing a fiber optic construction project. Located 15 miles east of Galesburg, Oak Run Lake Resort is one of Central Illinois’ most scenic, rural recreational communities. The area includes approximately 3,000 lots, 700 existing homes and a golf course over a 600-acre area, which also encompasses 20 miles of wooded shoreline for fishing and boating. This area now has access to high-speed internet and fiber-optics.
Mid Century installed numerous node cabinets in strategic areas throughout Oak Run with the objective of having shorter loop lengths, and shortening the distance of the fiber optics to each house. The result allows bandwidth to be increased, permitting Mid Century to offer more advanced broadband services.
These much requested enhancements boosted Mid Century High Speed Internet speeds to up to 15mb downstream and 1mb upstream. The fiber also brought advanced services to Mid Century TeleVision, such as, DVR and the ability to have up to three set-top boxes in the home. Also, if a customer has a need for higher speeds it could be easily be provided.
What services does Mid Century provide?

Popular in the Oak Run area is the ability for a residence to maintain an active home security system while they are away from home. Mid Century broadband allows for this service to remain activated even if the customer is on vacation, allowing for a greater peace of mind.
